Indoor Environmental Quality: Acoustics and Indoor Air
Indoor environmental quality especially in acoustical and indoor air quality is a concept that affects an occupant's health and productivity in a space. Having poor qualities can lead to lots of negative outcomes such as specific health issues.
Indoor air quality is governed by standards like the ASHRAE which covers the minimum ventilation requirements of a space to make sure there is sufficient outdoor air intake. This is to help maintain a healthy IAQ, buildings must also implement environmental tobacco smoke control measures. This helps also to prevent smoke transfer in units that are multi-resident. Effective strategies are source control to eliminate pollutants, proper ventilation and filtration, managing occupants' activities that may harm or affect the quality, and regulating the maintenance needed on HVAC systems.
Acoustic comfort is also a huge part of IEQ, especially in specific environments like schools or workplaces. In these environments concentration and focus is needed to the space working well. This should address sound insulation between rooms and a control over background noise from things like the HVAC and external systems. There are many different solutions to help the needs of this such as sound-absorbing materials, zoning noisy activities away from spaces of quiet.
Poor air quality and acoustics can lead to respiratory problems, fatigue, headaches, and reduced productivity. It is so important to think of these things first from the moment the design process begins in order to create a cohesive space.
COVID-19
The effects of COVID had some positive and negative effects on air quality itself. A positive being an increased awareness prompting more individuals to invest better into different ventilation, filtration systems, and air monitoring. This led to ventilation improvements like updated HVAC and portable air purifiers to reduce airborne transmission.
However, it also increased indoor occupancy which meant they were inside longer with poor ventilation. This led to a higher exposure to pollutants. Another fault was the overuse of disinfections which in poor ventilated spaces led to an increased indoor chemical pollution.
