  Plumbing Systems


    A plumbing system is the introduction and elimination of water and human byproducts to and from a building. Within plumbing systems there are three types of water supply, potable water, water that is good for drinking. Black water, wastewater that contains sewage from the toilets or kitchen sink. And gray water, wastewater from sinks, bathtubs, and washing machines. 



    There are many different types of plumbing systems that differ according to the application and needs of the space, these include wetlands, sewer treatment plan, and septic tank. Toilets are the single largest use of interior water. Highly efficient toilets use less than 1.28 gallons of water per flush. Low flow toilets are provided by all manufactures. Legislation now requires that new toilets require less water than older toilets. Dual flushing toilets use a mechanism that allow for two flushing possibilities when less water is required and two flushes when more water is needed. Urinals have two different types of waterless urinals do not require water to operate; this makes it easy for odors to be released. Low water urinals reduce water usage by 85%.  



    For sinks and faucets there are different types that allow for different applications. Automatic faucets have sensors that activate water usage. Gray water uses water from sinks and showers that can be used to flush toilet water. Light powered faucets use the automatic sensors that have no electricity required. 

    Something that is beneficial in design is to stack plumbing withing a building. This helps limit cost as well as helping manage work that needs to be done making it easy. 

Accessible Bathroom Design 


    When designing for accessibility in the bathroom, it is important to have enough space for the person to move around. There needs to be grab bars and handles that help them use the space effectively. In this first image the space is clean and open, making it easy to navigate. As well as having things like handles on the toilet and a bench system in the shower that can get wet. 

    This bathroom as well keep accessibility at the root of the design. It also keeps the space open and clean. Making it easy to navigate and move throughout the space. This bathroom also has a tub application that allows the individual to get into the tub without stepping over the tub threshold. Instead, it has a door and floor entry. 

    This last bathroom gives the space an open feel, making the whole room a wet room by extending the curtain over the track. This keeps accessibility at the root while also having the proper grab bars to assist them in their space.
