 Chapter 7 Walls 



    Walls have many different perspectives from the core they are structural, thermal, moisture, finish, acoustic, fire-safety, and sustainability perspectives. Chapter 7 is aimed at designers so there is focus on both performance and aesthetics of the wall component. Walls are both enclosure and partition systems, that have an influence on the perspectives. The chapter begins by discussing framing systems such as stud walls, bearing walls, masonry, and structural frame walls. This gave an amazing outline to strength and sustainability. It highlights insulation as a key component of wall assemblies, explaining how different materials and R-values affect energy efficiency, while also addressing the importance of vapor retarders and barriers in controlling moisture. Interior substrates like plywood and gypsum board have a wide range of finish materials, with a focus on durability, indoor air quality, and environmental impact. 

Acoustics and fire safety are major performance considerations in the design of a wall. Sound transmission class (STC) ratings and acoustical partitions, emphasizing how wall assemblies can enhance privacy and comfort in shared spaces. 


    Fire walls and bearing walls are examined in terms of code requirements, fire resistance ratings, and structural functions. Doors and windows receive a large amount of attention as wall penetrations that can weaken thermal, moisture, and acoustic performance; glazing types, U-values, solar heat gain coefficients, and emerging technologies like electrochromic glass are reviewed as strategies to improve efficiency.


    Sustainability in this chapter has trade-offs between embodied energy, operational efficiency, durability, and material selection. Masonry walls provide valuable thermal mass but carry a higher environmental footprint, while improper detailing of insulation or vapor barriers can lead to mold and poor indoor air quality. 


    The chapter stresses the importance of continuity in insulation and air barriers to prevent thermal bridging, while also highlighting the weak spots introduced by doors and windows. Designers are urged to consider finish materials carefully. Flexibility and adaptability in partition design, such as using demountable walls, are also encouraged as sustainable strategies. From an interior design perspective, walls are shown to directly affect finish options, the integration of doors and windows, acoustics, daylighting, and overall space quality. 


STEELCASE 



When looking throughout the steel case website I found the Campers and Dens case study. This design is for the commercial setting of an office setting. I was intrigued with the mix between private and public space but also the mix of enclosed or open spaces. At times these qualities can mix and match, creating a space that is usable in every time and situation. I was mostly interested in this because of my office project in studio currently, this is something I could possibly use in my own design. This creates walls that are set but have different transparencies that can communicate different things. Being able to separate closed and open spaces through the type of wall used.
